Lisa's Most Recent Article

My wife Lisa just finished up an article for an online newspaper. The article is about Arizona's Foster Voucher program and how it would have affected her had she grown up in Arizona. Lisa, for the uninformed, is a former foster child who lived in a number of group home placements from ages 13 through 16.

Lisa on Mix 97.1 Radio

Lisa Dickson at age nine with braids

My wife Lisa was on a local radio station last Sunday morning and will be again this Sunday morning. While interviewed by D.J. Dave James about her life story, Lisa presented current information about the Foster Care system in Ohio. The interview is presented here in two parts as MP3 audio files.

Oh Look! Mom’s Camera!

My cousin Laura has two little boys -- twins actually. You can see them at their first birthday party. They are bright little boys. One of them got ahold of his mother’s digital camera and began experimenting. Laura’s actual description of the event goes like this:

The boys were making funny faces during snack time last night so I grabbed my digital camera. I turned it on only to discover “internal memory full.” Since I hadn't taken any pictures, I was puzzled.

Turns out Jack had gotten his hands on the camera and used it to take a number of photos and three mini videos. The videos are very Zapruder-esque featuring the carpet, a blurry flash of Sam’s hand, some mysterious Fisher Price farm animals and dark shadows. No grassy knoll, though. The photos, in time order, show Jack “teaching himself” to use the digital camera. I like the little smile where he starts to figure it out!

I edited together two of the videos and the three photos to create a final piece which I have titled “Oh Look! Mom’s Camera!” I submit it for your viewing pleasure. As you watch it, remember that this little kid is only 21 months old -- and apparently brilliant! Thanks, Laura!

April 18, 1992 - Paper Rolls

This video was shot by my dad back in April of 1992 after a hearty family lunch at The Spaghetti Warehouse. This will be of interest to family, although it is an good example of excellent motion stabilization using iStabilize for the Macintosh if you are into that sort of thing.

The stars of the video, in order of apperance, are my nephew Zachary Myers, my ex-brother-in-law Mikol Myers, my cousin Laura Arthur, my eldest daughter Rachel Dickson, me (looking like a total dweeb in glasses), my sister Shelley Myers and my ex-wife Kim Farley. My father Kelly Dickson is featured as a disembodied voice.

Cutest Moment: my daughter Rachel dancing to While My Guitar Gently Weeps at about time marker 7:40.

The only other interesting detail (to me anyway): all of the music in the background of this video was playing on the stereo when the camera was rolling. However, I "sweetened" the audio track by running it through some denoising algorithms (to eliminate hiss, buzz and hum) then I mixed back in full stereo versions of the songs to closely match the recorded levels. The result is quite nice compared to the original video.

Below are links to three digital formats for this video: Windows Media 9, Quicktime 7 (h.264) and a form which is playable on the Apple Video iPods.

Fabulous Baker Boys’ Birthday

June 4, 2005
Jack and Sam Baker Birthday Bash

This is the celebration of reaching one year of life outside the womb for both boys.

They have lived a combined total of two “man years.”

A few key highlights: Jack slamming hands into his own personal cake, Laura opening some presents for the boys, candid moments with Laura and the boys’ grandparents (Pat and Joe Arthur), and Sam being cute with his big stuffed animal chair.

Autumn to Winter 1993

Here are four more gems from the past (at least for those of you who know the people in the videos, a.k.a. family members).

August 19, 1993
Carly and Daddy

Floor horseplay shortly before Kim and I broke up.

September 17, 1993
California

I took a week-long “decompression” vacation in the Los Angeles area.

My dad’s cousin Bill Richards graciously let me camp out at his pad / crib / whatever for the week.

November 6, 1993
Informal Gathering

This is an informal gathering at the house on Seabright Drive.

I didn’t live there anymore, but the kids are so cute, especially Carly trying to talk all sophisticated and “grown-up like” on her plastic phone.

December 19, 1993
Pre-Christmas at Chris’ Parent’s House

This was taped up near Cedar Point, where Chris grew up. We dated from late September of 1993 through about June of 1994.

I think is where Carly became terrified of dogs for a while.

These three home movies are charming and ultracute. They are of Rachel and Carly from the summer of 1993.

Lisa and a Baby

Lisa, of course, is my wife. This is a picture of her when she was about seven or eight, I think. The other night she spent several hours scanning in about 150 images from when she was a child. This is one of the better pictures, with the adoring look on her face. This is the look she flashes me whenever she thinks adoring thoughts about me (what a lucky guy I am).

I have no idea who the baby is. Lisa let me know very clearly that it was not her little brother because this baby is dressed in pink.

Are you happy that I posted something about you, hun?
